GRAND RAPIDS -- Two events aiming to provide education and inspiration are planned in West Michigan next week in honor of Disability Awareness month.
Richard Bernstein, a Detroit-area lawyer who is familiar to many because of his family's law firm commercials, will speak Wednesday at Grand Valley State University's on the Allendale campus.
Bernstein, who has been blind since birth, is active in helping clients with disabilities. He has represented the Paralyzed Veterans of American in a lawsuit involving seating at the University of Michigan Stadium and has worked to have broken wheelchair lifts fixed on Detroit city buses, according to GVSU.
His honors include being named a 2009 Leader in the Law by Michigan Lawyers Weekly and receiving the Tony Fillipis Award in 2010.
The event details: Bernstein's talk will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at GVSU's Cook-DeWitt Center in Allendale. It is free and open to the public. For more information for to GVSU's website.
On Monday, the Disability Awareness Day Conference will be held at Kentwood Community Church. The event will cover a range of issues, including health care and long-term care, emergency preparedness, employment, housing, community involvement and social security reform.
RoAnne Chaney, associate director of the Michigan Disability Rights Coalition, will give a keynote address.
The event details: It will be 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Kentwood Community Church, 1200 60th St. SE, Kentwood. Cost is $25 and registration is required.
