July 6, 2009
Drake Road and Maple Road in West Bloomfield will close July 13 for a new pedestrian light being added to the intersection's roundabout.
Both north and south sides of the already existing roundabout will close so the pedestrian crosswalk signals can be added.
"A lot of people don't understand how to navigate around the roundabout," said West Bloomfield resident Angelique Strong Marks. "You really have to wait until there is no traffic to cut across."
Roundabout Intersection to Get Pedestrian Crossing
Work on the project started Monday, but it is not expected to affect traffic until the 13th.
The road will remain closed until about Aug. 14.
Detour routes for Drake Road will be 14 Mile Road to Farmington Road to Walnut Lake Road and back to Drake.
The new pedestrian lights, called HAWK, will be placed at all four entrances to the roundabouts.
The new HAWK beacon lights are the first of its kind in the nation to be used at a roundabout.
"You'll come up to the beacon, push the button, it will flash and alert drivers that there is a pedestrian there, turn red and stop traffic," said Craig Bryson, public information officer for the Oakland County Road Commission.
The HAWK beacon lights will be tested at the site for one year. Western Michigan University is in charge of monitoring the site.
