New Federal Lawsuit Details Negligence In Death Of Boxing Legend’s Sister
July 16, 2008
The family of Vunies High, sister of Detroit boxing legend Joe Louis and longtime public school teacher and counselor, is suing the owner of a Southfield assisted living facility, outside of which she was found frozen to death in February, while under the facility’s care at the age of 92.
Attorney Richard Bernstein, of the Sam Bernstein Law Firm in Farmington Hills along with co-counsel, today filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Detroit against Capital Senior Ling Properties 2- Heatherwood Inc., which operates the Heatherwood facility in Southfield. The plaintiff in the case is Sidney High of Detroit, son of Vunies High and nephew of Joe Louis.
The suit charges that the facility and its operator are guilty of at least four negligent acts in this case, leading to Vunies High’s death. The suit seeks damages, but Bernstein also believes this case could serve as an example for how nursing homes and assisted living facilities should care for residents, nationwide. The case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge David Lawson.
