News Anchor Murray Feldman:
Historic and beloved Michigan landmark undergoing a very expensive renovation. Fox 2’s Bill Gallagher shows us this huge change has Michigan’s disabled calling themselves “The Victors.”
News Reporter Bill Gallagher:
Michigan Stadium is undergoing dramatic changes. A $225 million project will now include greater accessibility for the disabled. That’s after a long legal battle where Michigan’s Paralyzed Veterans sued the university for better access and more seats throughout the stadium for disabled spectators. The university finally agreed to a settlement. Richard Bernstein led the legal battle to force the changes.
Attorney Richard Bernstein:
What’s exciting about this is, is that the University of Michigan can really boast the fact that they now have the most accessible facility, the most accessible stadium throughout the entire United States.
News Reporter Bill Gallagher:
Bernstein, a Michigan graduate, fought the university’s earlier claims that the scope of the changes in the stadium did not fall under new federal standards. All along, the disabled veterans and critics of the project here argued the renovations triggered compliance with requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The access will be comprehensive.
Attorney Richard Bernstein:
The parking is going to be completely accessible. The access points to get into the stadium are going to be accessible. The concourses all throughout the stadium are going to be accessible. The access points getting into each section of the stadium are all going to be refitted and redone to be completely accessible.
News Reporter Bill Gallagher:
Bernstein says the changes he won for his clients will bring friends and families together to enjoy the Bigger House with a bigger, and more varied group of fans.
Attorney Richard Bernstein:
You’re going to have amazing seats for people with disabilities that are going to be spread all throughout the stadium.
