DePuy Hip Implants Recalled Due to High Failure Rate

On August 26, 2010, Johnson & Johnson’s medical device product unit DePuy Orthopaedics announced a global recall of two of the company’s hip implant devices: the DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System and the ASR XL Acetabular System.

The company recalled the implants because they were failing at an alarming rate. The “metal-on-metal” composition of these implants could release particles into the patient, potentially causing serious and painful reactions – sometimes requiring surgery to remove and replace the hip implant.

DePuy Hip Problems Were Known for Years

DePuy ASR hips have been implanted since 2005 in the United States. Unfortunately, an extraordinarily high percentage of people who got these hip replacements experienced implant loosening and pain.

Before the DePuy recall, independent experts reported the design flaws in the medical device. In addition, complaints to the FDA confirmed the design issues with the DePuy ASR hip replacements. Even the company admitted that it was withdrawing the ASR hip implants because data showed that these devices had to be replaced at a rate more than twice the industry average.

Despite the high failure rate, the company did not recall the products until approximately 93,000 patients throughout the world received the implants.
