Michigan Accident Checklist

If you were involved in a Michigan pedestrian accident, do you know what to do?

The following checklist can help you take the necessary steps to protect your legal rights in case of a Michigan pedestrian accident.

Stay Calm:
Stop.  Your first priority must be protecting yourself (or whoever is the injured victim).  Call an ambulance for any injured party, if necessary.  Do not discuss the accident with anyone other than the police.  Do not blame anyone, including yourself. 

Driver Facts:
Take down the name, address, operator's license number, date of birth, sex, state of license, and the phone number of the automobile driver.

Ownership Facts:
Write down the name, address, and the insurance company of the owner of the vehicle involved, if that driver is not the owner.

Injured Parties:
Seek information from police about all injured parties.  Take down their names, addresses, dates of birth, sex, and extent of injury.

Witnesses:
Be sure to write down the names, addresses, and phone numbers of any people who saw the accident but were not involved in it. 

Damages:
Note the make, body type, year, and license number of the motor vehicle.  Also, make note of any damage to the vehicle.

Draw a Diagram of the Pedestrian Accident Scene:
Write the date and time of the accident on the diagram.  In addition, write down information about the location, including the intersection, street names, any traffic lights or signs, any any other landmarks.

Report the Pedestrian Accident:
Tell your insurance broker or agent immediately.  Report the accident to the police right away, and get a copy of the police report as soon as it is available.
