"I'm Laurie O'Meara. I first met the Bernstein family in 2001. Michigan's special education rules were in jeopardy.
Richard Bernstein spoke on behalf of all students receiving special education services. Richard's efforts united religious, political, and educational leaders, families and the media. He brought public awareness to how important special education services are. He showed the importance of the similarities in people, not their differences.
Seeing Richard in action and understanding his commitment to our cause, was the beginning of what has become a wonderful friendship.
The Bernstein Law Firm sponsored public service announcements to inform viewers about the educational programs that serve our children. They showed the harm the proposed changes would have done.
Groups that had never worked together united and showed support for services that were in danger of being slashed. Because of the united voice that these groups created, we stopped the drastic changes and kept real educational choices for all students.
When Richard ran for the Wayne State Board of Governors, I worked with the family and the staff at the law offices of Sam Bernstein. These are good people, working hard, to help those who need support through tough times.
I am proud to know the Bernstein's and call them my friends. They inspire us all to do more in our communities on behalf of others."
